Win Jefferies on her 108th Birthday

Clarence Valley’s oldest resident turns 108

Happy 108th birthday, Win!

The Clarence Valley’s oldest and much-loved resident, Winifred “Win” Jefferies celebrated her 108th birthday on Monday, at her home at Dougherty Villa in Grafton.

Win is believed to be the 14th oldest living Australian and the 4th oldest living resident in NSW.

Win was born Winifred Matilda Chevalley, on 24 August 1912 (the year the Titanic sunk), at Southgate and grew up with her three brothers and five sisters on the family dairy farm, helping out with chores.

At 108, Win still takes great pride in her appearance and still does her own hair and makeup and always dresses, with matching beads and accessories.

On Monday, Dougherty Villa residents and staff surprised Win by dressing up in the 108-year-olds favourite colours of red and black and wearing her favourite accessory – matching beads.

Due to COVID-19 and the restrictions surrounding visitors to nursing homes, the staff organised red and black themed decorations as well as a special high tea – morning tea, as part of their ‘WINday’ celebrations.

Win also enjoyed a special visit from her daughter and granddaughter, during the afternoon.

At the time of going to print, the Independent had just received word that a special, late birthday surprise, was yet to come – so watch this space!
