A day in the life of Win

You would think that at 108 years of age you would start to slow down just a bit, but not so for Dougherty Villa resident Winifred ‘Win’ Jefferies.

Dougherty Villa’s Leisure and Lifestyle team leader, Ros Houlahan, shared an insight into how the Clarence Valley’s oldest resident spends most of her days.

“Every morning Win gets up early and does her own hair and make up and gets out her outfit which has been chosen the day before, which is on a hanger with matching cardigan and matching beads,” Ros said.

“She’s always early for breakfast which is at 8.30am and she chats with the other residents on her table, usually about the latest news for the day and about what’s happening around the world.

“After breakfast she takes herself for a walk around the carpark; she would probably walk further but doesn’t at the moment with COVID. She always likes to exercise. She’s the only resident that does that religiously after all three meals.

“After that she normally likes to read the paper and then check out the activity calendar to see what’s on for the day. She loves music entertainment and attends the music singalong. She loves word games and plays two hands of housie two or three times a week and Hoi (card game) and she’s the best card shuffler.

“Win always knows everything that’s happening in the villa.

“At lunch, she always likes to have her hot meal followed by sweets, followed by a walk.

“During the afternoon she will have a little rest and then watch some TV or a chat with the staff that come in.

“Some people like to have dinner in their rooms, but Win always likes to go down for dinner, before returning to her room to choose her outfit for the next day and hang it up.

“So, her day is very full.

“Win has the best sense of humour – I asked her the other day what music she liked and she said Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra and she started singing “These boots are made for walking”, and she gave me a little grin – she’s just amazing,” she said.
