Iluka’s very own eccentric Sammy MacDonald; surely the R&A has a rule that matching socks must be worn. Any player wearing mismatching socks will incur a two Stroke penalty for every shot made whilst being so ill attired. Sam’s score just went off the charts…very colourful Sammy. Image: contributed

Iluka Veterans golf

The competition on February 5 was our monthly medal Stroke event which always brings out the best and the worst in us.

The Div 1 winner with a nett 68 was Paul Mitchell with Neil Grady r/up with a nett 70. I believe poor old Neil had a 9 on the 5th which means he could have had anything. Sorry Neil, the gossip went around very quickly.

Our popular winner Paul (DeChambeau) Mitchell lamented the fact that he now has to buy another golf cap to fit all his monthly medals on. He already has about 10 golf caps full of medals and as he is only a youngish Vet he will no doubt win heaps more and buy the new style DeChambeau cap. On a more humble note Paul (himself, a tireless volunteer around the course) praised the army of volunteers, helping greenkeeper Doug Turner present the course in the outstanding condition that it is. Well done to all.

Div 2 winner was Danny Mortison with a great nett 68 with Barry Brims r/up with a nett 68.

Unfortunately Danny missed the presentation (being an early morning starter) but in his absence the Vets accepted an anonymous suggestion that Danny will soon sponsor a Vets golf day and donate the hundreds of golf balls he has lifted as prizes and NTP’s. He has that many golf balls the ball rundown will go to the entire field.

NTP’s went to 1/10 Danny Mortison; 6/15 to John Caldwell; 8/17 to Neil Grady.

The Roy Ellery 3rd shot NTP 3/12 went to Danny Mortison….unbelievable, the guy is touched.

The Barry Robbie Mars Bar and Porcelain Cup went to Kate Brims.

The ball rundown went to nine players with 73 or better.

A reminder to all Northern Rivers Vets golfers (and beyond) that the Iluka Vets Open Day (a single Stableford) will be held on Tuesday February 19. Nomination sheets are now open so please book your spot and enjoy our great hospitality.
