There is no doubt that as a consequence of the current dry conditions the extra run on the course has helped in the achievement of some outstanding golf scores. That was evident in the last Saturday’s Naeco Blue 18 hole single Stableford event with the three top scores of the day achieved by three C Grade players. The overall winner, with a healthy handicap of 16, was Josh Tracey who accumulated an outstanding score of 46 points to completely dominate the field of 100 players. Josh, who has only recently rejoined our Club following his absence from Grafton, due to work commitments, recorded 8 pars, 2 birdies, 8 bogies on the remaining holes to achieve that score, which should result in him being promoted to B Grade. The next best score on the day came from Noel Allen (18) with 44 points which gave him the win in C Grade from runner-up in that grade, Matt Katon (16) with the third best score on the day, 43 points. A countback was required to determine the winners of A Grade with John Thompson (8) and Jon Bellamy (4) both scoring 40 for the 18 holes. B Grade also needed to rely on the countback procedure to sort out the winners with Trevor Townsend (13) getting the cash from Chris Wheelahan (13), both recording 39 points. Results in D Grade were better defined with Michael Corfe (23) claiming that grade with 38 from Robert Usher (22) on 36 points. Winner of the Saturday Mark Harvison sponsored pro pin was Kevin Vaughan (25) whose tee shot finished 68cm from the cup. To win a pro ball you needed a score of 36 or better to qualify. For the shot of the week, we need to refer to last Tuesday’s competition when John Tibbs recorded his 5th hole-in-one in his long golfing career. John achieved the ace on the par 3 1st hole, and the amazing thing about it, he did not see the ball go into the cup. Apparently John was a little unhappy on how he hit the shot and turned away from the balls progress. In the mean time the ball continued towards the green eventually finishing in the hole. A great result, most of us just happy to hit the Green. The results of the Tuesday Veterans competition saw Bruce Wicks (30) win on a countback from Graeme Smith (18) both with 42 points. Michael Skipper (25) was named second runner-up on 41. The member competition results were the same with the exception of Andrew Fletcher (18) being awarded the second runner-up spot in that particular component of the competition. Pro balls went down to 33 for the members and 34 for the Veterans. A reminder to all those players who regularly play in the Tuesday competitions that on 24th October will be the Veteran’s Presentation and Annual General Meeting, with a 9.30 shotgun start to get proceedings underway. As a result of this there will not be the normal walk up start playing condition. Nominations for this particular day only must be made through the computer terminals and groups must be limited to four players per group. As reported elsewhere this coming Friday the Monty Conderman Memorial Pro Am is scheduled with play to commence with a 9.30am shotgun start. To assist with the smooth conduct of this particular tournament, spotters are required which will help in the flow of play. If you can help in this regard just give your names to Mark Harvison who will allocate a particular hole to you to carry out the ball spotting, and at the same time witness some big hitting golf. Next Saturday the event will be the McLennan Deece Optometrist Monthly Mug, which as normal will be a Stroke event. The overall winner of this event and the various grade winners on the day will qualify for the 2017 Gold Mug and Silver medal playoffs scheduled for 4th November which is sponsored by Clocktower Hotel. This Sunday the top gun shootout for both Men’s and Women’s Veteran golfers will be held, sponsored by Coopers Brewery. To determine if you have qualified for the shootout final, refer to the leader board located in the Clubhouse.
