Croquet fever hits the Clarence Valley

In what appears to be an emerging sport in the Clarence, Lawrence Golf and Recreation Club hosted a croquet sign-on and registration day last week. Despite it being one of the most uncomfortable days of the year, the day went very well. Thirty knot winds, aside the twenty eight intrepid croquet players battled on to see some remarkable shots, considering the gale force winds. The Lawrence Golf and Recreation Club will host the croquet as a sub-committee of the main organisation. According to the organisers of the event, the day was successful, with two new members joining the Golf Club. Members of the Coutts Crossing Croquet Club have also expressed an interest in playing regularly at Lawrence. Vice president Jean Meaney, who helped organise the day, was also impressed. “We were fortunate in have some coaching players at the day to explain the ins and outs of the game,” she said. “Croquet is an interesting and easy to play sport and can be played by all age groups. It also helps older people in their hand eye co-ordination” she added. The Club will be holding regular croquet days and welcomes visitors who wish to play this interesting and historical game.
