Bye bye bowls!

The Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club had managed, until the recent state government decision to shut down all non-essential services, to maintain its social bowls program, albeit subject to some significant control measures. Club management continued to undertake in-depth risk analysis paired with fulfilling all the requirements of the specific State and Federal Government guidance and directions concerning attendance numbers at public gatherings, hygiene parameters and social distancing, mixed with common sense to provide an environment that also acknowledged that exercise and participation in sport remains an important part of physical and mental health for everyone and this was appreciated by the members.

The club, as part of the state-wide shutdown of all non-essential services, will suspend all bowls events including social bowls for the foreseeable future. Noting that the situation is dynamic and subject to change, members are requested to check with the club on the current status before contemplating attendance. The best method of checking is via the club’s website, Facebook page and/or the large electronic sign adjacent to the club on the corner of Wooli and Claude Streets.

These information channels will provide members with the most up to date information on the status of the club. Additionally, if the situation eases and the club is again allowed to operate under strict limitations on numbers at public gatherings, hygiene parameters and social distancing requirements, the club will again utilise its recently developed and very useful traffic light system to inform members. The system indicates whether the club is below the directed public gathering numbers (green), nearing the specific limits (amber) or at capacity and subsequently directing patrons not to attend (red). The health and safety of our members and staff is of paramount importance and the club will not jeopardise either.

Yamba Community Bowls Battle winners: Roz’ Rebels

Until the recent change in circumstances, some bowls was possible at the club with the 2020 Community Bowls Battle reaching a conclusion on Tuesday evening, St Patrick’s Day. The ‘Roz’s Rebels’, led by Roz Moore, maintained their late run of form to take the title atop of a very congested final ladder. ‘The Highlanders’ narrowly claimed second place from the ‘OC Lakers’ with the ‘Missing Links’ not far away in fourth spot.

In conjunction with the final of the Yamba Community Bowls Battle, a one-bowl singles challenge was contested amongst the participants. This unique event allows bowlers one bowl with the bowler furthermost from the jack being eliminated on each end until a definitive winner is declared. Again, it was proven that ultimately cream does rise to the top with Pam Fleming and Karen Ellis making their way to the final showdown. Acknowledging her continued improvement throughout the competition, it was Karen who took the win and the winner’s cheque.

The results from last week’s social bowls are as follows:

Wednesday March 18

Winners: Frank Pate and Bill Williams; Runners up: Craig Zuber and Gary Taylor; Encouragement: Doug Howat and Alan Reed.

Friday March 20

Winners: Norm Greenup and Chris Muldoon; Runners up: Brian Kay and Don Freeman. Encouragement: Bob Gallagher and Steve Burns.
